The story

Built in 1862 in Essex, New York, the sailing canal boat General Butler lost her steering in a winter gale on December 9, 1876, crashed into the Burlington breakwater and sank in 40 feet of water. A Burlington ship chandler and his son rowed out and took all five aboard to safety.
