Pick a month
Typical weather, not a forecast: averages for 2021–2025 (air, rain, wind) and 2023–2025 (sea), data from Open-Meteo (ERA5 / Copernicus, Météo-France). Covers an area of roughly 10 to 25 km around the destination.
Sources agree the west/south coast season is roughly Nov–Apr (SSI, Ecoteam, PADI Travel), some extend it to Oct–May (PADI blog, Scuba Diving, Tales of Ceylon). Unawatuna Diving opens 15 Oct–10 Apr and moves to the east coast in the southwest monsoon (May–Sep), so Jun–Sep is shown as closed and the shoulder months as possible. Bluewater Dive Travel gives Oct–Feb as optimal.
Usually closed or not dived: Jun–Sep.
From the easiest to the most demanding. Levels with a dashed outline are estimates we are still verifying.
